Mr. Henry Jordan, Proof that Love of Work Equals Success
David O. McKay once said, “Let us realize that the privilege to work is a gift, that power to work is a blessing, that love of work is success.” Love of work. I’m sure that phrase strikes a chord with many of our small business owners. When you open a small business, you marry it. And just as it is with man and wife, sometimes we forget just how blessed we are…to have the opportunities to enjoy what we do and with whom we do it.
Mr. Henry Jordan enjoyed what he did. He enjoyed his life that he built within the framework of Carolina Appliance & Furniture. He enjoyed the people that walked through his doors and he enjoyed the people with whom he worked. He was a true success. And though we’ve lost one of our long-time business owners in downtown Conway, his legacy can live on through the workings of his son, Alan.
Mr. Henry Jordan opened the doors of Carolina Appliance & Furniture in June 1968, and according to Ms. Eloise Prince, who has worked there for more than 36 years, it was his business philosophy that made him such a treasure to our community: God first, followed by family, followed by business.
His personal service, attention to his customers, and his heartfelt appreciation of their business were for what people will remember him. He was one to meet and greet folks with a smile at the door, have a seat on a sofa and chat for a spell. Often, says Ms. Eloise, people would come in just to visit with Mr. Jordan. He took the time it takes to build the personal experiences with his customers. He got to know them and understand their needs. No matter the time it took, he would spend that extra minute to make sure all questions were answered before sending someone on his way.
What says more than my words can say in this column is to call a business to talk about an employer and hear tears on the other end of the telephone line. Those tears tell the story. Mr. Henry Jordan will be missed. He was a success.
